This fun and interactive outdoor class is designed to give students a safe and comprehensive introduction into the world of the benthic macro-invertebrates that indicate the health of a freshwater stream. A respectful gathering activity and discussion of aquatic habitat conservation is coupled with a hands-on discovery activity. With the careful and respectful sampling activity, students discovery a new underwater world with their own hands.
Class vocabulary includes: Benthic Macro-invertebrates, larva, nymph, nyad, predator, prey, indicator and keystone species, food web, relationships, pollution, safety, and danger. Also included is a gentle introduction to concepts of earth stewardship, conservation, and preservation.

Requirements:
Outdoor area that can accommodate seating & table space for each student. An accessible shallow freshwater creek, stream, brook, or small river where students can collect rocks and stones to discover aquatic life forms.
